What Can Locally Grown Flowers Do for Your Business?

With 45% of flowers from the wholesaler being thrown out before they even get sold, it’s worth questioning the status quo of global imports.  During shipping, flowers get banged up. Big time!  Your business may not be able to afford to keep buying from the traditional wholesalers if you have to throw out nearly one of every two flowers you receive.

Good thing there’s an alterative!  Locally-grown flowers aren’t racking up frequent flyer miles and they’re typically in your hands just a day or two after harvest, never having suffered the indignity of being shoved in a box and tossed around.  So what exactly can locally-grown flowers, like those sold through PFG, do for your floral business?

Less Shrink: Without the stress of a long ride in the global supply chain, local stems are superior in quality with much less breakage and far better hydration.  You won’t be tossing them out and taking a loss. Nor will you have to order more “just to be safe”, like you do from the traditional wholesaler.

Less Labor: Local growers do all the work of a studio assistant, stripping stems and making fresh cuts on stems that go directly into water and never leave a water source. This means you do not have to process anything when you get it in! Check that tedious task off your list!

Less Trash: There are no boxes, packing paper, bubble wrap, box straps, plastic sleeves, and all the other usual trash that comes with a flower delivery from the traditional wholesaler.  You can save yourself dozens of trips to the dumpster and all that time wasted breaking down boxes!

Less Chemicals:  Did you know that flowers are coated in chemicals?  Particularly imported flowers.  This is just the nature of the business when you’re trying to get horticulture products across international borders.  Nobody wants a new pest or disease to come in on those carnations.  A study conducted in Belgium with 20 volunteer florists found that they were exposed to 111 active chemicals (pesticides and fungicides) in just two days of regular work in their shops! And the concentration levels of those chemicals was also alarming to researchers.  We can’t speak for all locally grown flowers, but the ones sold through PFG are largely chemical free entirely.  What a relief for your health!
