Meet Alyssa Van Alstine of Liberty Plants who joined PFG in November 2022.
Hi Alyssa!
How long have you been growing flowers?
I’ve enjoyed growing flowers and interesting varieties of plants my whole life, but it was when I lived in Philadelphia that I first started growing commercially, starting out at farmers markets in 2016.
Where is your farm located?
Trappe, PA.
Can you give a brief history of how and why you became a flower farmer?
I’ve always loved plants of all kinds. My background is Environmental Science and Education. I worked for engineering firms as an environmental scientist, then as a science teacher in the Philadelphia School District. When I found out I was pregnant with my 3rd child in 4 years, daycare didn’t seem as worth it. I started Liberty Plants as a side hustle to make some money while I stayed home with the kids. What started as growing veggie plants for the farmers market evolved into growing flowers for market bouquets and for florists. I quickly ran out of space at our place in Roxborough, and we moved to Trappe in 2018.
What do you find rewarding about what you do?
I love seeing the joy flowers bring to people, whether it’s just a market bouquet or for a larger occasion. I also like the challenge of figuring out how to propagate and grow new varieties.
What’s your favorite crop(s) to grow?
Lisianthus, Strawflower and Heirloom Mums.
What are you doing when you aren’t farming?
Hanging out with my family, reading, playing Wordle.
What causes are you passionate about?
Supporting local business.
If you could farm anywhere else in the world, where would it be?
Somewhere warm.. I love tropical plants, especially orchids.
Do you have any pets?
A dog, 2 cats, 2 guinea pigs, 4 chickens (more hatching soon) and an unplanned rooster.
What’s your favorite beverage?
Coffee, Gin & Tonic & Palomas.
