China asters (Callistephus chinensis) arrive just when summer begins leaning toward fall, bringing rich color, beautiful texture, and an almost old-fashioned elegance to floral work.
Despite their common name, China asters aren’t true asters. They’re annual flowers available in an impressive range of forms—from fluffy, peony-like blooms to smaller, shaggy flowers with delightfully tousled petals. Colors span soft peach, blush, and lavender to saturated raspberry, violet, burgundy, and nearly blue.
For florists, China asters are especially useful as supporting focal flowers. Their rounded shape adds substance without overwhelming a design, while their intricate petals create depth and movement. They work beautifully in garden-inspired wedding arrangements, late-summer centerpieces, hand-tied bouquets, and transitional autumn palettes. Pair them with dahlias and grasses for a lush seasonal look, or combine them with cosmos, phlox, and delicate foliage for something lighter and more romantic.
China asters generally offer a great vase life of about 7–10 days when purchased fresh and handled well. There are lots of side shoots coming off the main stem that can be put to use in bud vases and boutonnieres. Because their petals can bruise, be sure to give blooms a little room during transport and storage.
They may resemble other late-season flowers at first glance, but China asters have a character entirely their own: lush without being heavy, nostalgic without feeling dated, and exceptionally versatile on the design bench.
