Growers Bunch: What’s That?

When you’re shopping with PFG, you may see the term “Growers Bunch” in the description of a given flower or foliage in our inventory.  Curious what this means?  Short answer is: the stem count in the bunches varies.  You might get 10 stems. You might get 20.
But why isn’t the stem count consistent?  The crops that are offered as Growers Bunches are typically fussy to harvest and not a high-value stem. Usually they are wispy fillers like cress, agrostemma, orlaya, nigella and grasses. When growers harvest, rather than carefully examining each stem one at a time to make sure it is in perfect condition, they instead grab a whole handful of plants and cut all the stems at once.  This means that some of the stems in the bunch may not be at the optimum stage for use in the vase – some too young, some too old, some maybe a bit crooked.  BUT, you will be sure to get at least 10 good stems and likely quite a lot more.
Growers Bunches are a good value and a great way to add those little bits and bobs to your designs.  One very important note about them though: the foliage has typically not been removed from the stems by the grower.  You will need to strip the foliage yourself.  It’s important to process the stems and clean them up as soon as they arrive in your shop or studio to ensure that foliage deep down in the bucket doesn’t start to rot and cause problems.
