Geothermal-Grown Flowers: A More Sustainable Way to Start the Spring Season

Late winter and early spring flowers are always exciting.  We’re so hungry for color and freshness after the long lag since local fall blooms.  But how those spring flowers are grown matters just as much as when they arrive.

This season, PFG is pleased to offer tulips and other early spring flowers grown in geothermal greenhouses at Moonshot Farm in central New Jersey. This innovative eco-friendly heating system allows the farm to produce beautiful early-season flowers while dramatically reducing the energy and fossil fuel typically required to heat a greenhouse.

Traditionally, heated greenhouses rely on propane or natural gas to maintain growing temperatures during the colder months. While effective, those systems can carry a significant energy footprint. Geothermal greenhouses take a different approach. By tapping into the earth’s naturally stable underground temperature, geothermal systems circulate water or air through underground pipes to gently warm the greenhouse space. Because the ground retains heat even in winter, this method can significantly reduce reliance on fossil fuel heating while still creating the ideal environment for early-season crops.

What this means for floral buyers:

  • Lower environmental impact
Using renewable ground heat dramatically reduces the carbon footprint of flower production.
  • Earlier access to local flowers
Moonshot’s geothermal greenhouses allow PFG to offer locally grown flowers earlier in the season, helping extend the regional flower calendar.
  • Higher-quality stems
Stable growing conditions produce sturdy stems and reliable vase life—qualities designers depend on.
  • A meaningful sustainability story
Being able to share that your flowers were grown using renewable geothermal heat adds transparency and environmental value to your designs.

In addition to tulips, Moonshot is also producing ranunculus, anemones, snapdragons and stock in their geothermal greenhouses so keep an eye out for those as March and April unfold.  Then in late fall (November and December) these same greenhouses will provide us with specialty mums, dahlias, snapdragons, ornamental cabbage, lilies, and more.

Innovations like geothermal greenhouse production help expand what regional farms can grow while using less energy. Moonshot’s system allows PFG to offer exceptional early-season flowers grown with a lighter environmental footprint, furthering our efforts to establish a more resilient, local-forward, climate-conscious floral supply chain.
