Architectural elements are having a major moment right now. You all can’t seem to get enough. The new “it girl” on the block? Garlic scapes.
Just a few years ago, we bet you’d barely heard of these curly wonders, let alone had a bride request them in her bouquet. Yet here we are—garlic scapes have gone from veggie garden oddball to floral design royalty, like cowboy boots at a black-tie wedding.
Which begs the question: what’s the next vegetable poised to delight your designer senses?
Asparagus fronds are about to enter the chat. You heard it here first.
Asparagus, that unassuming spring spear, transforms into the dreamiest XL plume of airy texture by summer. Long after farmers market shoppers have moved on from their seasonal obsession, the plant starts pulling double duty as a florist favorite.
If you’ve ever used Sprengeri fern, imagine a locally grown, seasonal cousin with a slightly wilder personality. Asparagus fronds offer that same airy texture and durability, but with a distinctly farm-grown feel and without those nasty little thorns!
And if the looks aren’t enough to win you over, the performance will be. Asparagus fronds are incredibly durable, holding beautifully out of water for days. Perfect for installs and large statement pieces! They dry well, add movement without bulk, and right now they’re the perfect shade of green to blend into just about any palette. Later in the season they’ll begin to turn golden, making them equally at home in autumn designs.
We’ve got both gorgeous garlic scapes and armfuls of asparagus fronds in the shop now, as well as in the weeks ahead. Looking for even more vegetable-inspired design material? We have artichokes, funky cucumbers, bronze fennel, and black pumpkins all on deck for later this season. It’s a great time to play with your food!
